Event description
Come and find out how to start your journey through your family's history in this taster session, led by an experienced genealogist.

About this Event

Researching family history is a fascinating way to discover your roots in a social and cultural context.

What is this session for?

The aims of the taster session are:

• to kindle a greater interest into your ancestors;

• to give you skills to allow you to start your journey of discovery; and

• to see if there is enough interest to form a group and hold regular meetings.

The session will be led by Keith Simpson, an experienced genealogist with an interest in social history.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to begin investigating your family’s story through some of history’s events, using data, stories and memories from various sources.

You will be introduced to numerous sources that will enable you to gain data and insights into your ancestors, including:

• Census returns 1939, 1911 and every 10 years back to 1841;

• Newspapers;

• Civil registration 1837–present;

• Migration (emigration and immigration) and shipping records; and

• Overseas records, including from the USA, India, and the Caribbean.

Do I need to do anything first?

If you have time, you can do some preliminary work in advance. This will help you get the best out of the session.

Start with yourself; after all, this is your detective story. Collect records (such as birth and marriage certificates) for yourself, parents and grandparents. Draw out a simple family tree. Speak to your older relatives about the past and your ancestors, and write down their knowledge and stories.

If you can’t do any of that before the session, don’t worry – you can still come along and find out more about how to get started.

How much will it cost?

You will not be charged for booking a place on this session. However, we will ask for donations on the night to cover the cost of the room – between £2-5, depending on your means.

What comes next?

If enough people are interested, we hope to hold regular meetings of the group where you will be able get help with your research, and share what you find.
