PEAT Outcome - relevant legal knowledge

OBJECTIVES

This seminar will discuss the work of the Scottish Law Commission and, in particular, the Commission’s current Family Law Reform project. Delegates will have the opportunity to hear from the Commissioner and to discuss the project. The seminar will also discuss proposed changes to the Children (Scotland) Act 1995 and a private member's bill in relation to mediation law reform.

PARTICIPANTS

This seminar will be of interest to solicitors, trainee solicitors and other legal professionals who work in family law.

SPEAKERS

Kate Dowdalls Q.C. Kate was a solicitor in private practice before coming to the Bar in 2000. She took silk in 2013. Kate has specialised in Family Law throughout her career, including claims for financial provision on divorce and cessation of cohabitation, adoption and permanence applications, international child abduction and residence and contact disputes. She has appeared in Sheriff Courts throughout Scotland, in the Outer and Inner Houses of the Court of Session and in the UK Supreme Court. She is a regular contributor at Conferences on Family Law related topics. Kate was appointed as Commissioner to the Scottish Law Commission in July 2018 and is leading the Commission’s Family Law project.

Nadine Martin is a Senior Associate in Harper MacLeod. She qualified in 2006 and has practised in Family Law since then. She is accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a Specialist in Family Law, Child Law and Family Mediation. She is a member of CALM, the Family Law Association and is a trained collaborative lawyer. She is a proponent of trauma informed practice. She often contributes articles on the subject of child and family law to the Journal of the Law Society of Scotland and the Family Law Association Magazine.
