More and more, we’re hearing worrying headlines involving young people and unsafe situations in Sheffield. As parents, carers and community members, these are the stories we hope we never have to face.
At Excel, we believe that the best form of protection is preparation.
That’s why this September we’re inviting families to join us for a free, practical safety workshop designed to empower both parents and children with real-life strategies to stay safe in everyday situations.
This isn’t about fighting—it’s about awareness, building confidence, and knowing how to avoid danger by staying calm and creating distance.
Together, let’s make safety a shared family skill.
That’s why on Saturday 20th September, we’re inviting families to join a unique, practical workshop that goes far beyond physical self-defence.
This workshop helps raise children who:
✔ Feel confident and secure in themselves
✔ Don’t feel the need to carry weapons to feel powerful
✔ Know how to handle peer pressure, bullying, and unsafe situations
✔ Can stay safe without resorting to violence
What You’ll Learn Together
This hands-on session is designed for parents and children (ages 10+) to learn side-by-side. You'll leave with tools to:
✅ Get away from danger fast, without needing to “fight”
✅ Use voice and body language to deter aggression
✅ Understand the difference between freezing and acting under pressure
✅ Spot and avoid risky situations early
✅ Stay safe at school, in public, and while travelling
The Bigger Picture: Why It Matters
👉 Confidence reduces violence. A 2022 report from the Youth Endowment Fund source found that self-protection programmes help children feel safer and more in control, reducing the likelihood of them carrying weapons or becoming involved in violence.
👉 Self-defence training improves mental health. Research shows it increases self-esteem, reduces anxiety, and builds resilience — all crucial for standing up to bullies or resisting peer pressure. (NCBI)
👉 Most attackers target people who appear unaware. Training in awareness and posture alone can drastically reduce the chance of being targeted.
Why Join as a Family?
• Shared learning builds trust and teamwork
• Reinforce positive values like kindness, respect, and courage
• Create confident communicators, not aggressive reactors
• Learn practical tools that are realistic and safe for all ages
We don’t teach disarming or unrealistic tactics. We teach real-world strategies rooted in psychology, safety, and smart decision-making.
