Family Sign Language is the perfect opportunity for families who are interested in exploring sign language to support their deaf child. Covering everyday topics including food, daily routines, and feelings, our experienced tutors help you to develop visual communication and signing skills to use at home with your deaf child.
If you have a deaf child aged 0-4 years in your family, join us for our FREE six-session Glasgow (0-4) course. With free onsite childcare for your deaf child and their siblings, you have the space to focus on signing whilst knowing your kids are having fun. Siblings aged 5+ also have the option of joining our kids' sessions!
Families should attend all six sessions, which take place on:
- 21 and 28 January
- 18 and 25 February
- 18 and 25 March
Sessions run from 10am - 12.30pm, and are relaxed and informal. You'll even be given handy resource packs to help you practice at home!
We have limited spaces available, so book now - we're already looking forward to seeing you there!
Is this course for people who want to sign full-time?
No - Family Sign Language is for any family with a deaf child aged 0-8 years who wants to explore signing. What you do with what you learn is up to you - some families choose to use sign alongside speech, others keep signing for particular situations like bath or bedtime, and some families do choose to go on and use sign as their main communication. NDCS supports you to make an informed choice which is best for you, your deaf child, and your family.
What happens in the kids sessions?
Kids sessions are available for siblings aged 5+ (if you have a deaf child aged 5-8 years, please book places on our Glasgow 5-8 course which takes place at the same location, dates and times). Kids will be looked after by staff from Occasions Mobile Creche as they learn with their tutor through a range of fun activities. They then have the chance to play as they wish under supervision of Occasions staff.
Do we need to attend all six sessions?
Ideally, yes - we know that life gets in the way sometimes, particularly when you have a young child; however, to make the most of the course, and to help you learn, we strongly recommend you attend the full course.
Whilst we are proud to offer courses to families for free, the cost of delivering a course is high. We want to ensure that every penny of our funding from Big Lottery Fund is spent supporting families like yours - help us to do this by attending the events you sign up to.
What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?
There is free on-street parking available around Touchbase on a first come, first serve basis. Alternatively, Kinning Park Underground is a few minutes walk away, and there are a number of bus routes which stop close to Touchbase.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No - once we have your booking, we'll know to expect you.
Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?
If you need to change your booking, please let us know. Your tutor will teach you to fingerspell your name and the names of those in your family - it helps if they know names in advance!
