Monique Kaur Kellay is a participatory artist with a practice focused on learning through making. She has a deep interest in how things are made across different cultures and communities looking at craft practices and their applications throughout the world and sharing these approaches with new audiences.
Inspired by symbols, shape and pattern these hands-on family sessions will focus on craft practice from South Asia exploring some of the techniques and processes used in textile production.
These workshops are designed for children aged 4+ and accompanying adults working together.
Saturday 1 November: Block Printing
Based on the traditional practice of block printing participants will explore the process of relief printing using shapes to make playful repeat patterns.
Saturday 15 November: Bandhani tie dying
This session explores the meditative practice of Bandhani, using small knots to make abstract textile patterns. Participants will experiment with wrapping fabric with thread and rope as well as exploring how to dye fabric. (Due to the length of this session and the drying time of the fabric, we recommend that you bring a plastic bag to take away your material to dry at home. Some will be provided.)
Saturday 29 November: Kantha Stitching
During this session we’ll use a simple running stitch to piece together materials in the style of Kantha embroidery.
Saturday 13 December: Charpai weaving
Using reclaimed scrap material this session will revolve around collectively weaving a communal charpai (day bed) inspired by traditional South Asian processes.
