Event description

Description

A workshop on evolutionary genetics

Fantastic Forces is an interdisciplinary workshop for postgraduate students that focuses on the most recent developments in evolutionary genetics. We believe this will appeal to a diverse group of students interested in how the four driving evolutionary forces – selection, drift, mutation and migration – shape phenotypes and genomes. The workshop will comprise three themed days, each divided into a morning and an afternoon session (see detailed Programme). The morning sessions will consist of a series of lectures from researchers at different stages of their careers. Each talk will focus on theoretical results and/or on cutting-edge methods developed to investigate evolutionary and demographic processes. The afternoon sessions will be dedicated to practicals and discussions put together by the organising committee. These tutorials will introduce attendees to novel genomic approaches, the types of data used and how this data is stored, and the methods employed to analyse them. A final Discussion session will provide attendees with a space to go over research ideas and career prospects.

By the end of this workshop, attendees will have acquired practical data analysis skills as well as a strong theoretical grounding in different aspects of organic evolution. We decided not to charge any attendance fees for this workshop, as we would like this activity to be affordable and accessible to anyone interested in the topic.
