FareShare: how food redistribution supports people and the planet
Event Information
About this event
Did you know that the footprint of good to eat wasted food in the UK is a whopping 1.6 million tonnes per year?
1% for the Planet has invited James Persad of FareShare to tell us about the charity's work, redistributing good food — which would otherwise go to waste — to community groups and charities, and its positive impact on communities as well as the environment.
In 2019/2020, FareShare supported almost 11,000 charities and every week, 933,178 people accessed food from the organisation. The food redistributed by FareShare contributed towards 57.3 million meals and saved the charity sector £14.1 million.
James is the Head of Marketing and Communications at FareShare. Since Jan 2018 he has helped to grow awareness of FareShare twenty fold, through innovations such as the Surplus with Purpose fund proposition to the food industry, which provides a financial contribution to a food business for redistributing food to charity via FareShare, rather than wasting it, and the school holiday hunger campaign ActiveAte that Marcus Rashford campaigned on and made a national news item with great success.
Prior to working at FareShare, James worked at the Carbon Trust for over 8 years, managing its marketing and events program internationally. A long, long time ago he worked in advertising and marketing agencies for 11 years.
1% for the Planet UK Steering Committee member Fred Clarke of MOJU will be in conversation with James, and there will be time for your questions at the end of the talk.
The event will be introduced by Madelyn Postman of Grain Sustainability, also a member of the UK Steering Committee.
FareShare is a nonprofit partner of 1% for the Planet.
This event will be recorded and the video will be sent to all ticket holders, in case you can't make it on the day.
