Course Content/Objectives

The session aims to develop teacher’s confidence in teaching the topic of food security.  This CPD will cover the importance of ensuring the world’s population has a dependable supply of food to survive, as well as the implications of a lack of food security on the world’s population and factors which affect food security such as agricultural methods.

The session also covers a number of activities designed to help children learn about food security. These include exploring the importance of bees and their role in producing food, the pros and cons of using fertilisers, investigating how much world the food needs and why some people do not have enough food, and exploring the types of food which are grown in Scotland and other parts of the world and how their unique climates and agricultural methods support this. The activities all are linked to outcomes and experiences within the Sciences as well as other curricular areas including Social Studies and Health and Wellbeing at Level 1 and 2.
