About this event

The Clewer Initiative are holding an online seminar for those working with migrant communities, exploring the issue of labour exploitation and modern slavery in the fresh produce supply chain.

The seminar will include information on:

  • Labour exploitation and modern slavery in the fresh produce supply chain.
  • How to spot the signs of exploitation.
  • What to do if you are concerned about someone you are working with.
  • How The Clewer Initiative's Farm Work Welfare App can be used as a tool to support migrant workers in the fresh produce sector.

The session will take place on Tuesday 25th May 2021 from 11:00-12:00. There will be a presentation from The Clewer Initiative followed by discussion and an opportunity to ask questions.

This seminar is particularly timely as many migrant workers will be recruited over the next few months during the summer picking season. There are many criminal gangs looking to exploit migrant workers. They are extremely savvy and sophisticated in the methods they use to manipulate and trap workers. Therefore, it is extremely important that we are aware of the issue and the tools available to support those vulnerable to exploitation.

We believe that the tools to end modern slavery already exist within the local community and that the Church has a primary responsibility in leading these efforts. The Clewer Initative enables Church of England dioceses and wider church networks to develop strategies for detecting modern slavery in their communities and help provide victim support and care.
