Event description

Description

Our Annual Safeguarding Conference will take place on Wednesday 25 September 2019 at The British Medical Association, BMA House, London.

Our keynote speaker in the morning will be Dick Moore, of the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust. Dick has been a housemaster, English teacher, rugby coach and headmaster and is passionate about the emotional well-being of young people. He is an instructor in Youth Mental Health First Aid and you may have seen his inspiring TedX Talk "Dancing or Drowning in the Rain".

The Charlie Waller Memorial Trust with whom Dick works is a charity set up in memory of Charlie following his death in 1997, to increase awareness of the symptoms and danger of depression and to remove the stigma that is attached to mental illness.

The afternoon keynote speaker Dr Sam Royston, Director of Policy and Research at The Children’s Society and author of Broken Benefits - what’s gone wrong with welfare reform. He is a regular commentator both in the media and in giving evidence in Parliamentary Select Committees on welfare reform issues, and is ideally placed to present an overview of some of the challenges facing mental health provision today.

Other sessions at the Conference will be many and varied, including a panel of young people who are supported by a national charity, discussing mental health challenges and how they can be overcome; and a panel focusing on mental health and social media featuring senior representatives from Facebook.

We will conclude the day with a session on safeguarding the safeguarders, delivered by Dr Noreen Tehrani, widely recognised as one of the most experienced practitioners in the field, and and Phil Doorgachurn, Director of Safeguarding at Lime Culture.

The full agenda for the day may be viewed here.
