With the success of our series of 'Ask the Expert' events......when we asked 'what would like next next', we listened to the one theme that is vital to support you..... you asked of course, for support from legal experts.

We are therefore delighted to welcome a new member to our team of experts who brings us the first in a series of 'FASD Informed' legal events to support the 'legal rights' of those with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure, Fetal Alchol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).

We invite you to a gentle discussion with our Director Julie who will host our online evening with Velma Eyre, experienced Lawyer & Author of many papers on the law & your rights in supporting the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum & complex disabilities.

Examples of her work include the recent co-produced publication 'FASD and Transitioning to Adulthood for carers & parents'; downloadable free HERE

Velma will provide an overview of 3 of the key areas to consider when supporting a child with prenatal alcohol exposure, Fetal Alcohol, Spectrum Disorder (FASD).

Discussion for the evening includes ....

NUMBER ONE -

The ‘disability’ myth

- does an individual with FASD have a disability?

- does it matter?

- what about IQ?

NUMBER TWO -

You can feel empowered - start as early as you can (very early)..... and ‘power-up’

- reject the ‘wait and see approach’

- it’s a marathon not a sprint, get ahead without the stress

- why collate the evidence and how to do it

- you are the expert - getting professionals to work with you rather than against you’

NUMBER THREE -

Age 18 comes (chronologically) around quickly - your child is now legally an adult - don’t let it surprise you.

- be proactive during the teenage years

- the law does not recognise that your child is physically aged 18 but 'developmentally much younger'

- The law provides tools to help you to scaffold and protect your FASD adult.

CONCLUSION

The law is not a magic wand but it can be an extremely powerful tool if:

- understood

- used correctly

Tickets will be on a first come basis as we expect the event to be popular.

We offer a reduced rate for carers / parents and adults with FASD at £10 per ticket. Professionals at £30 per ticket; all funds raised will go towards FASD awareness raising projects to directly support families with FASD.
