Event description

Description

As part of University of Northampton Students' Union's Black History Month campaign, we will be showing the film Belle.

Directed by Amma Asante, Belle is based on the true story of the (Black) mixed-race Georgian Dido Elizabeth Belle, played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Miss Sloane, Black Mirror)

Raised by her great-uncle Chief Justice Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and her aunt great-aunt (Emily Watson), Belle's upbringing gives her privileges that her skin colour prevents her from fully participating in.

Set in backdrop of the historical Zong Case, Belle is a story of triumph, bringing to light one of the most famous Slave Trade legal cases, whilst simultaneously showing Black women contradicting all the racial stereotypes that Georgian society propagated.

Belle was not a slave, she was a member of the British elite!

Arrive by 6:30 to gurantee a seat. 7pm start.
