Description

Algorithmic Walking

An algorithmic walk uses a simple set of rules to guide the walker. The rules form a set of directions that the walker follows. Therefore, the walker’s route will not be intuitive and habitual, but will be structured by the algorithm. (However, the walker does need to interpret the given directions, deciding, for example, where ‘first right’ or ‘second left’ might be.)

Familiarise yourself with the simple set of rules (for example, first left or first right) and deciding in advance what you will do if you reach a dead end/cul-de-sac. Who knows what you will experience!

Workshop

Experience the art of walking on this fantastic lecture and walking tour around historic Edinburgh. After an introduction to walking as an artistic activity and a demonstration on how to record your walk using a notebook or your mobile phone, you will be guided through Edinburgh where you will use a predetermined set of rules to experience the city like never before!

Route

It is more difficult to prescribe a route for the algorithmic walk because the precise path taken is determined by the rules which the participant follows. However, the general area in which participants will be walking is as follows:

Dry day plan: Thomson’s Land → High Street → Closes and streets between St John’s Land and South Bridge → High Street → Thomson’s Land.

Wet day plan: Thomson’s Land → Holyrood Road → Cowgate → Guthrie Street → National Museum of Scotland (for an algorithmic walk within the museum → Guthrie Street → Cowgate → Thomson’s Land.

Participants should meet in Room G37 in Paterson's Land at the start of the workshop, before heading out as a group during the latter part of the session.
