Features are the centrepiece of any magazine or newspaper supplement – the stories given the most space to be deep and insightful, eye-catching and revelatory, absorbing and entertaining.
In this practical two-day Masterclass you'll get expert insight from writers and editors, and learn both the mechanics of feature journalism – from pitching to editing – and the art of writing a great piece. Guest speakers include Guardian feature writers and the editors who commission them.
The Masterclass will cover:
- making first contact with commissioning editors
- how to pitch (and how not to)
- analysing publications to work out what they're looking for
- different feature structures, treatments and formats
- tone and style
- how to improve your writing and self-edit
You'll leave with plenty of feedback, plus two feature pitches, and suggestions of titles to send them to.
Alan Rutter has been an editor and writer for over twelve years, working across digital and print media. He has commissioned features from a wide-range of contributors – from reportage photography during the Iraq war to essays from the Poet Laureate, and criticism from leading novelists to opinion pieces from stand-up comics. He was features editor and online editor at Time Out, and has written for and worked with magazine brands including WIRED, Vanity Fair, GQ, Vogue, Men's Health, Delayed Gratification, Jack, Telegraph supplements and Maxim.
Simone Baird is an experienced editor and journalist. She was the features editor at Time Out London, where she remains contributing editor. She has commissioned cover stories on a wide range of subjects – from an acclaimed I Love Ldn issue in response to the 2011 London riots, to a Christmas issue guest edit by Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson. As a writer she has contributed to the Sunday Times Travel magazine, Jockey Slut, Sleazenation, The Face, NME, Muzik and several Australian broadsheets.
