Event description

Description

Join us on a journey through the historic markets of Glasgow. Sample foods ancient and modern as we eat our way through the city, culminating in a traditional poke of fish and chips in the magnificent former fishmarket, The Briggait!

EXPLORE the heart (and stomach) of Glasgow - from bread and beer to cheese and fish. Find out how we fed our city in the days before supermarkets. Along the way we will explore some of Glasgow’s re-purposed historic markets, including the magnificent City Bazaar at Candleriggs, (now better known as Merchant Square and the Old Fruitmarket), and the Old Cheesemarket, (now home to a nightclub). We will also pass by the sites of long forgotten markets, warehouses and factories, and indulge in some historical titbits along the way, including the Victorian roots of Glasgow’s fondness for locally ground and roasted coffee.

EAT! To keep our energy levels up along the 1.5 km walk we will sample foods old and new, culminating in a very special poke of fish and chips in The Briggait. The magnificent category A listed main hall of the Briggait was built in 1873 as the city fish market and is now a bustling, creative hub for visual and performance arts. Hear the fascinating story behind this innovative and architecturally stunning building, how it was saved from the wrecking ball and what the future holds.

All this while eating chips!
