Description

Feet On The Ground: the Traveller stopping-place & the city

Join us on a stroll in the area around Patrick Studios, with Gypsy/Traveller historian Amanda Reed from the “Gypsyville” Facebook group. We’ll explore the unseen histories of Gypsy and Traveller stopping-places in the area, dating back over a century; and learn some of the stories that lie hidden behind the face of the city.

Feet of the Ground is the product of a year’s research by community members at Leeds GATE and artists Delaine Le Bas, Vanessa Cardui, Rudi Holmes and Grace O’Neill, exploring memories and experiences of living roadside. It draws on archival material from Leeds GATE’s Archives and the Brotherton Library’s Romany Collection, and from the memories and stories of Gypsy/Traveller people. It maps and memorialises stopping-places around Leeds, and explores what they mean to Travelling people’s sense of identity.

Mostly level walking at a gentle pace, the walk will take about an hour, and is suitable for both adults and children.

Meet at Patrick Studios, St Marys Lane, LS97EH
