A weekend of music, dance and Gaelic fun in Aberfeldy! Deireadh-seachdain spòrsail de cheòl, dannsa agus Gàidhlig ann an Obar Pheallaidh!

About this Event

"Fèis Thatha* is a music school or festival. It enables people of all ages to access, participate in and enjoy the traditional arts and Gaelic language through a diverse programme of activities.

Taking place over a weekend 14th & 15th September, participants can chose from a range of activities. These include the Fiddle, whistle, guitar, chanter & pipes, percussion, dancing, art, Gaelic Games, Gaelic singing, Gaelic lessons and cooking. On Saturday night there is an evening Ceilidh.

We aim to give young people and lifelong learners the opportunity to experience and engage with traditional music and Gaelic culture in a way that supports them in developing their social skills and inspires them to reach their full potential.

We are excited to announce that our tutor team for Fèis Thatha 2019 include:

Maeve Mackinnon - Gaelic song;

Findlay Napier - Guitar;

Sandra Mackay & Carrie Afrin – Fèis Bheag

Callum Douglas – Whistle, Pipes & Chanter;

Steve Fivey – Percussion;

Karys Watt – Fiddle;

Patsy Reid – Groupwork;

Fèis Thatha Ages: P4 - S6

Young people can choose three different classes from a huge list, including various musical instruments, percussion, Gaelic song, dancing and group work.

There is an opportunity for group work for advanced musicians.

Everyone takes part in learning the whole Fèis song. This is a Gaelic song to learn together and perform.

Cost:

£30 First Child

£25 Second Child and

£20 for subsequent Children

(Ticket for the weekend and includes free entry to the Tutors Ceilidh on Saturday night)

Fèis Bheag Ages: P1 - P3

Fèis Bheag or ‘Wee Fèis’ offers a variety of music and arts activities for younger primary school pupils. Participants will experience different elements of our main Fèis event, giving them a fun and engaging taste of traditional music, song dance and art. Sessions will run both the morning and afternoon of our Main Fèis

Saturday 10am - 12pm or 2pm - 4pm

Sunday 10am - 12pm or 2pm - 4pm

Cost: £5 per child per session

(Ticket includes free entry to the Tutors Ceilidh on Saturday night)

All of our tutors are experienced, professional musicians, skilled in working with young people. We also have a pool of supervisors and volunteers who help our events run smoothly. Young people are supervised at all times and we work in accordance with Child Protection and Health & Safety Guidelines. Our staff are all members of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme administered by Disclosure Scotland.

We are committed to making traditional music accessible to all, to eliminate barriers to participation. We have a number of concessionary places available to participants who require support and may also be able to offer help towards transport costs . If you would like to talk in confidence about this or support for learners with disabilities or specific access requirements for your child, please contact us or let us know in the booking form.

Cròileagan

Ages 0 - 5 (All children to be accompanied by a carer)

A fun informal session or music and song for our youngest particiants. Games, arts & crafts, music, stories, rhymes and more! Why not join in the fun, sessions run by staff from Croileagan Obar Pheallaidh.

Adult Fèis

Ages 18+

We have a few things to try!

NEW CLASS ADDED - Adult Gaelic Singing - You don’t need to need to have any previous knowledge of traditional music to enjoy our Adult Fèis. Fancy trying singing? Join in this informal 'come-and-try'workshop for Beginners with the amazing Maeve MacKinnon.

Saturday 10.30am - 12pm (Beginners)

Already singing a few songs but would like to improve your technique? Join Maeve MacKinnon for expert tutition!

Sunday 10.30am - 12pm (Intermediate)

FREE (Donations accepted)

Music - THIS ADULT CLASS IS NOW FULL. You don’t need to be able to read music and you don’t need to have any previous knowledge of traditional music to enjoy our Adult Fèis. Fancy trying the whistle, guitar and percussion? Join in this informal 'come-and-try'workshops.

Cookery Demonstration - Interested in finding out the gaelic word for ingredients, fascinated by traditional recipes, want to find out how to used foraged ingredients, Join Jacqui (Medical Herbalist) for this fun informal session in the Campus cookery school.

Sunday 10am - 12pm

Gaelic Chat - Informal Gaelic conversation circle or beginners lessons. Interested in learning Gaelic and more about the local Perthshire Gaelic, come along and try it.

We offer classes at the following levels:

B - Beginner – (a chance to try something for the first time).

I - Intermediate (can play a few tunes/ getting regular tuition)

A - Advanced – (have a larger repertoire/can easily learn by ear or reading music).

There will be a focus on Group Work for Advanced level participants

On Saturday night we change location (only across the road!) and kickback our heels to Ceilidh the night away. Please bring along your friends and family it's sure to be a fun filled evening of traditional music and dancing!

There will be a chance to win some fantastic prizes on the night too with our big raffle!

Fèis Thatha is part of a national movement of over 47 fèisean, which bring people together to learn and develop skills in traditional music, as well as exploring a range of other art forms and the Gaelic language. At national level, the Feisean are seen by many as one of the most successful arts initiatives in Scotland.

Fèis Thatha is run by volunteers and we are members of Fèisean nan Gàidheal, which provides support.

Fèis Thatha has also been generously supported by Perth & Kinross Council and the Community Investment Fund.
