FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION (FGM) AWARENESS WORKSHOP

About this Event

The following training session is only for employees of Waltham Forest Council and partner agencies from the Community Safety Partnership:

This workshop provides the opportunity for practitioners to develop their awareness of female genital mutilation (FGM). The course will examine indicators that a person is at risk and what actions practitioners should take to prevent and intervene when they suspect that FGM is a concern. It will raise participant’s awareness of legislation (FGM Act 2003) and national government guidelines. The course will place FGM with in a child protection framework.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes

By attending this course, participants will:

• know what constitutes FGM

• identify who practices FGM globally, nationally and in Waltham Forest

• understand reasons given for performing FGM and the impacts it has on individuals

• be able to recognise indicators that a women/girls has had/is at risk of FGM

• know the mandatory reporting duty of professionals have around FGM

• understand current legislation around FGM

• be able to respond appropriately to cases referring to the appropriate agencies

• Develop a shared understanding of the beliefs and ideas influencing the practice of FGM

• Understand the health and social impact
