Course overview:
This course provides the opportunity for practitioners to develop their awareness of female genital mutilation (FGM). The course will examine indicators that a person is at risk and what actions practitioners should take to prevent and intervene where they suspect that female genital mutilation is a concern. It will also raise participants' awareness of legislation (Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003) and national government guidelines. The course will place FGM within a child protection framework.
What?
Aims of the training:
This Multi-Agency training course will increase Practitioners’ knowledge and confidence in identifying female genital mutilation (FGM) and in responding effectively to protect:
• Improved recognition of terminology specific to cultures, in various languages and the definition and types of FGM
• Support the ability of professionals to recognise risk factors and indicators of FGM
• Offer tips, considerations and local signposting resources for engaging women and girls in services and for opening discussions on FGM with those impacted, their families and other professionals.
• Explore the beliefs used to justify the practice and the importance of engaging with men and other caregivers
• Understand the longitudinal impacts of FGM on girls and women across various domains and explore interventions and supportive services
• Understand the safeguarding responsibilities, reporting mandates and applicable UK laws
Learning outcomes:
• Recognise the definition of FGM, culturally and linguistically-specific terminology and discuss the differences between types of FGM
• Identify the risk factors for and indicators of FGM and the varied impacts on girls and women
• Demonstrate an understanding of the applicable UK law, including the Female Genital Mutilation Act and mandatory reporting duties, and the role of professionals and multi-agency communication in safeguarding and reporting.
