About this event

Celebrate the publication of Jamia and Aurélia’s new book THIS BOOK IS FEMINIST with an exclusive FREE discussion around what it means to be a feminist in today's world.

Jamia and Aurélia will be in discussion with Samantha Williams, owner of inclusive online bookshop and carnival, This is Book Love (www.thisisbooklove.com)

6:30pm Wednesday 30th June 2021

About this Event:

THIS BOOK IS FEMINIST is the new book from feminist icon, activist and best-selling author Jamia Wilson (Young, Gifted and Black) who invites all teens and pre-teens to explore what it means to be a feminist today. Featuring NYT best-selling illustrator Aurélia Durand’s (This Book is Anti-Racist) powerful, vibrant artwork, THIS BOOK IS FEMINIST serves as a call-out to the next generation of feminists.

In this event, Jamia and Aurélia will discuss with Samantha what it means to be a feminist in today's world. With decades of activist experience across women’s rights, diversity and equality, Wilson will explore how social categorisations overlap to create systems of discrimination. We will also be finding out from Aurelia, where she finds her inspiration to so perfectly express ideologies through her artwork.

We will aim to unpack some of the language and theories around women’s rights and social justice, so that children and young people in the audience will have a better insight into what it means to be a feminist.

Some ideas we will be exploring are:

1. Is it ever too early to introduce ideologies around race and feminism to children and young people?

2. How does art act as a political tool/weapon .

3. How can classrooms better support these conversations in classrooms where teachers and school curriculum can be so focussed on Maths and English?

4. Should everyone be a feminist?

This will be followed by a Q&A.
