Feminist Archive South Exhibition Launch and Workshops
Event Information
Event description
Description
The Feminist Archive South is celebrating 100 years since some women got the right to vote with Hatpins to Hashtags, a programme of free events, workshops and an exhibition creating opportunities for reflection, lively discussion and action on feminist issues now – in the age of the hashtag.
Over the last 100 years, from hatpins to hashtags, women have defended themselves and fought for equal rights with whatever tools are to hand. Celebrating the legacy of suffrage and the Women’s Liberation Movement, Hatpins to Hashtags will bring untold feminist narratives to light and raise awareness of how technology can be used as a tool in grassroots activism.

Drawn from the rich collection of over 1000 posters held by The Feminist Archive South, these posters are testimony to the activist energy of the movement and the determination of women to speak out and organise on their own terms.
Upcoming workshops at the Red Brick Building:
Feminist Futures: Feminist herstory, activism and DIY culture
9 September
The Feminist Futures educational workshops aim to educate young people about UK democracy and gender inequality through the diverse herstories of women’s activism.
From poster, badge and zine making to feminist cut-up poetry, young people aged 16 – 30 years old will have an opportunity to creatively respond to an inspiring collection of archive materials, the issues they raise and how they relate to contemporary gender politics. Participants will be invited to submit their creative contributions to a regional FAS exhibition and project website.
Digital Democracy: taking activism online
7 and 8 September
Women wrote the first software but are now massively under-represented both in the mainstream tech industry, and in the movements challenging the ways tech is being used to control and exploit.
The Digital Democracy workshops will look at ways of connecting with local networks and some of the global movements currently seeking to build a fairer and more inclusive digital world, and at ways of using online software as a tool in grassroots activism – for existing and potential projects. Open to all self-identifying women and non-binary people of all ages.
