Event description

Description

Looking for the best way to support your young fencer?

A practical course to help you understand the sport!

You can’t do better than to learn the basics yourself! This beginners course will equip you with a sound knowledge of fencing from the moves to the rules to the etiquette and how to support a fencer on the piste.

Other benefits will include strengthening thighs, buttocks and stomach; reduced weight and increased agility. A certain amount of dedication will be required but it's worth it!

This 10 week course will be suitable for people who haven't previously fenced, or for those who fenced a long time ago and would like to update their knowledge and coordination. You’ll learn rules, traditions, techniques and tactics. While learning the blade work, you’ll exercise in pairs or with the coach. Acquired skills are practised further during fencing bouts.

All elements are taught slowly and repeated often to ensure that you grasp the move - as well as understanding when it should be executed! There will be more theory than is usual on a beginners course so that you can really help your fencer: practical application of the rules, how the timing works, what is right of way, how can you challenge a referee, what is a parent's role in developing an athlete?

We will also look at basic strength and conditioning and what muscles are engaged for each basic move – so that you can help your fencer develop in the correct way.

By the end of the course the participants should have acquired enough general knowledge of the sport to feel not only competent to fence with more experienced fencers but able to understand what’s going on, how to encourage a fencer's development and how to help “piste-side”.

You will have to appropriate knowledge to be examined for the BAF Bronze Proficiency Award and be able to continue training at a club.

10 week course limited to 6 adults to ensure enough time for discussion and individual work.
