Synopsis: La Cantante Calva portrays the daily life of an English married couple in the outskirts of London. The couple are waiting for their guests, who are late for dinner, so they have decided to start eating. Through satirical dialogue and absurd situations, the characters try to communicate, without succeeding, leaving a glimpse of a parody of society and a critique of humanity. Our proposal updates the play in today's Madrid.

Eugène Ionesco performed La Canta Calva (La cantatrice chauve) in May 1950 for the first time with the Théátre des Noctambles company.

In October 2025, Ay de mí will perform it again at this venue.

The two English couples, who lived in the suburbs of London, now have Spanish names and live in Madrid. They don't wear nice suits and skirts from the 50s, but clothes bought in department stores.

Those actors and our actors are separated by three quarters of a century. Many things have changed... but have they really changed?

The theatre of the absurd confronts us with ourselves, it is a mirror in which we can look at ourselves and recognise the ridiculousness of our existence. Everyday life absorbs us, it shakes us up and gets us into a tornado of superficiality from which it is impossible to get out. It seems that something or someone is holding us back. Are we capable of getting out of our confinement or are we condemned to live like this forever? What does what we say mean? What do the gestures we make mean?

Are we someone or are we just puppets?

¿Somos alguien o solo marionetas?
