ONLINE EVENT: The University of Portsmouth Graduate School hosts its second Festival of Doctoral Research

About this event

This year's theme is ‘Research Culture and Communication’ and we're also celebrating 10 years of the Graduate School.

This event is Online via Zoom. Members of the Graduate School will be on campus during the day, location TBC. We are hoping to stream the event and have posters and images displayed. We will have very limited spaces if you wish to attend in person on the day. Though please note this event is entirely online so you don't need to be there in person.

What to expect

Keynote Speaker Professor Jim Al-Khalili OBE FRS, Theoretical Physicist, Author and Broadcaster, as our Keynote Speaker. Jim opened the Graduate School in 2011, so we’ve invited him back to talk about research culture and research communication.

Doc Fest Talks – Hear doctoral students talk about their research and interests in captivating and inspirational ways.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT) final – An 80,000 -word thesis would take 9 hours to present. Their time limit... 3 minutes!

Research Image competition – Visualising doctoral research in a creative and interesting way. Think photography, graphic design, collage, and more!

Tweet your Thesis Competition - Can you effectively communicate your research in just 280 characters? Give it a try, add images, gifs, be creative!

Bake your Thesis - NEW for 2021! Turn your thesis into baked goods.

Research poster competition - You know the score. Communicate your research at a professional, coherent, conference level.

Research Theme Lead Talk (TBC) – Hear Research Theme Leads discuss what research culture and communication means to them, and how to communicate research with impact.

Alumni panel - Doctoral Alumni talk about their research degree experience and where they are now, offering sounds and friendly advice to our current PGRs.

Spotify playlist - Provide us with your motivational tunes so we can play these during breaks.

Other – End of the day we'll present the prizes and offer a happy farewell.
