George Magnus
Is China is Jeopardy?
Wed 20 November 2019, 11:00-12:00
We The Curious
£8 / £6

George Magnus – former chief economist at UBS Investment Bank and author of Red Flags: why Xi’s China is in Jeopardy – considers the threats to China’s continued economic rise, specifically in the context of the governance system under President Xi Jinping. China has become a large and confident power both at home and abroad, and while its core economic challenges are not unique, they are many, and have gathered at a critical moment in China’s development. He examines the traps that China must confront and overcome in order to thrive: debt, middle income, the Renminbi, and an ageing population.

Magnus discusses the possible outcomes of conflicts over trade, China’s evolving relationship with President Trump and the country’s attempt to win influence and control in Eurasia through the Belt and Road initiative.

Bristol Festival of Economics is presented in association with Triodos Bank.
