Festival of Economics
In our second Festival of Economics, economists and other experts from around the UK will be debating with each other - and their audiences - some of the key economic questions of our times. The sessions include the ageing of British society, the shift in global economic power from the West to Asia and China, reforming public services, inequality and why it matters, regulating the banks in the wake of the financial crisis, and the yawning regional divide in the UK economy. At a time of great change and uncertainty, economic expertise is essential, but the issues are too important to leave to the experts. The aim of the Festival of Economics is to enable a debate between citizens and researchers, one that will offer insights and fresh perspectives to everybody taking part.
Intergenerational Economics and the ‘Jilted Generation’

Shiv Malik, journalist and co-author of Jilted Generation: How Britain has Bankrupted its Youth
Katharine Whitehorn, Observer
Some say the baby boomers have bankrupted the youth of Britain. That ever-spiralling house prices put home ownership only in the hands of the well-off with access to the 'Bank of Mum and Dad’? And that young people, rising costs, high rents and repayment of student loans mean they are not able to save for pensions and may not be able to contribute to the welfare state. Do we really have a ‘jilted generation’ or have all generations faced their distinctive problems?
