Festival of Economics
In our second Festival of Economics, economists and other experts from around the UK will be debating with each other - and their audiences - some of the key economic questions of our times. The sessions include the ageing of British society, the shift in global economic power from the West to Asia and China, reforming public services, inequality and why it matters, regulating the banks in the wake of the financial crisis, and the yawning regional divide in the UK economy. At a time of great change and uncertainty, economic expertise is essential, but the issues are too important to leave to the experts. The aim of the Festival of Economics is to enable a debate between citizens and researchers, one that will offer insights and fresh perspectives to everybody taking part.
Reforming Public Services
Chair: Heather Stewart, Observer

There is greater pressure than ever for public services to become more efficient as budgets are cut, and more responsive to the increasing and changing demands people are making on them. However, the reform of public services is politically controversial territory. What is the evidence as to how to go about these reforms? Do other countries offer useful lessons? Will an ageing population inevitably lead to big changes in what the public sector can provide?
