Festival of Economics
In our second Festival of Economics, economists and other experts from around the UK will be debating with each other - and their audiences - some of the key economic questions of our times. The sessions include the ageing of British society, the shift in global economic power from the West to Asia and China, reforming public services, inequality and why it matters, regulating the banks in the wake of the financial crisis, and the yawning regional divide in the UK economy. At a time of great change and uncertainty, economic expertise is essential, but the issues are too important to leave to the experts. The aim of the Festival of Economics is to enable a debate between citizens and researchers, one that will offer insights and fresh perspectives to everybody taking part.
The State of Economic Recovery in the UK
Will Hutton, Observer columnist, writer on economy and society
Andrew Sentance, Senior Economic Adviser to PwC
Simon Wren-Lewis, Professor of Economics, University of Oxford
Over the past six months 'recession' has given way to 'recovery'. With many economic figures showing signs of improvement, and house prices rising, there’s been an increase in confidence in business and among people generally about the prospects for the British economy. How well-founded is this? Is it built on a housing bubble? And if we are in recovery, is this something that is shared widely or confined to the well-off, and to London and the South East??
