Description

Bristol Decides 2020: Mayoral Hustings
Sat 21 March 2020, 11:00-12:30
Great Hall, Wills Memorial Building
Free, but booking required

On 7 May 2020 Bristol will vote in a city-wide election for the mayor (as well as the council and police and crime commissioner). What are the big issues facing the city? What are the challenges and opportunities the next mayor will have to deal with? Who has the vision, ideas, leadership skills and drive to take Bristol forward for the next four years and lay the foundations for the long-term future of the city?

Our first mayoral debate will feature Sandy Hore Ruthven (Green), Mary Page (Liberal Democrats), Marvin Rees (Labour) and Samuel Williams (Conservative). In a wide-ranging, 90-minute session, each candidate will make their case, be interviewed by Festival of Ideas director Andrew Kelly, and will discuss and debate issues facing the city, what they would like to see done and, critically, how they would deliver. Subjects are likely to range from education, jobs, inequality, housing and Bristol post-Brexit to transport, air quality, climate and ecological emergencies.

We are taking questions in advance from audience members to ensure that we can ask the candidates the maximum number on the day.

Festival of Ideas will be organising other events for the mayoral election, including a second session when other candidates have been declared.

This series is run in partnership with BusinessWest, University of Bristol and University of the West of England. We are grateful to University of Bristol for hosting this event.

Events start punctually and, out of consideration to other audience members and speakers, our policy is not to admit latecomers. Please make sure to arrive before the advertised start time to take your seat/s.

There will be a returns queue on the day and any empty seats will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis a few minutes before the start of the event.

We have restricted the number of tickets that can be booked to one per transaction. This has been introduced in an effort to stop people automatically booking multiple tickets without confirming if they have guests to go with them. We hope this will help to limit the number of 'no shows' at the events, which currently run at around 35% of bookings. If you need more than one ticket, you can click on the booking link again. The little extra effort involved will hopefully put off those who don’t really need more than one, but not those who do.

The Festival of Ideas endeavours to hold its events in venues that are accessible to all. The Great Hall in the Wills Memorial Building has a loop system and is accessible to wheelchair users. For more information about accessing the venue, check here. If you have specific access concerns, please do contact us with any questions.

We sometimes film and photograph Festival of Ideas events. Please let us know if you do not wish to be filmed or photographed.
