Event description

Description

Diane Coyle
Women and Economics
Tue 8 May 2018, 19:00-20:00
Waterstones (Union Street entrance)
£8 / £6 / £4.50
£4.50 Partner Rate is for staff, students or members at the following organisations: Arts Council England, Bristol City Council, Business West, University of Bristol and UWE.

Economics has a problem with women and it’s getting worse, not better. The proportion of women studying the subject in the UK is declining, and economics is one of the most male-dominated academic disciplines. There is a similar dismal pattern elsewhere, a leaky pipeline of more and more women dropping out at every career stage. Diane Coyle explains why this is an existential issue for economics and discusses how damaging ‘Boys’ Own Economics’ can be when economists have such a key influence on public debate and policy. Examining contributions from prominent women in the field – including Joan Robinson, Elinor Ostrom and Edith Penrose – she explores what needs to be done to fix the problem.

Please note that you will be asked of proof for your eligibility of a concession ticket. Concessions apply to Full Time Students, Job Seekers Allowance, Incapacity Benefit claimants, over 60s and disabled people. The Partner Rate applies to those working at the following organisations: Arts Council, Bristol City Council, Businesswest, University of Bristol and UWE. Please note that no refunds/exchanges are possible for tickets already purchased at the higher price.

Please ensure you use the correct email address. This is where your ticket will be sent. If you do not provide the correct address, you will not receive the acknowledgement email or ticket. Please show proof of ticket (either print out or on device) at the door.

Please note we only refund tickets if the event is cancelled. Events start punctually and, out of consideration to other audience members and speakers, our policy is not to admit or issue refunds to latecomers.
