Description

Furry Logic: The Physics of Animal Life
with Matin Durrani and Liz Kalaugher
Wednesday 8 March 2017, 18:30-19:30
Institute of Physics
Free, but booking required.

The animal world is full of mysteries. Why do dogs slurp from their drinking bowls while cats lap up water with a delicate flick of the tongue? How does a tiny turtle hatchling from Florida circle the entire northern Atlantic before returning to the very beach where it was born? And how can a Komodo dragon kill a water buffalo with a bite only as strong as a domestic cats?

These puzzles, and many more besides, are all explained by physics. From heat and light to electricity and magnetism, Matin Durrani and Liz Kalaugher unveil the ways that animals exploit physics to eat, drink, mate and dodge death in their daily battle for survival.

They also introduce the great physicists whose discoveries helped us understand the animal world, and the animal experts of today who scour the planet to find and study the animals that seem to push the laws of physics to the limit.

In association with Institute of Physics Publishing.

Booking opens 15 January 2017.

Advance booking is required for this event. The building is fully accessible. The event will be amplified and there is a hearing loop system.

We have restricted the booking of tickets to one per transaction in an effort to avoid people booking multiple tickets without confirming if they have guests to go with them. We hope this will limit the number of 'no shows' at the event. If you need more tickets, please submit another booking. You can use the same name and email address.

Please ensure you use the correct email address. This is where your ticket will be sent. If you do not provide the correct address, you will not receive the acknowledgement email or ticket.
