Description

James Bridle
New Dark Age: Technology, Knowledge and the End of the Future
Tue 26 June 2018, 19:00-20:00
Waterstones (Union Street entrance)
£8 / £6 / £4.50

£4.50 PARTNER RATE is for staff, students or members at the following organisations: Arts Council England, Bristol City Council, Business West, University of Bristol and UWE.

We live in times of increasing inscrutability. Our news feeds are filled with unverified, unverifiable speculation, much of it automatically generated by anonymous software, while companies dominate their employees through surveillance and threat of automation. As a result, we no longer understand what is happening around us.

Underlying all of these trends is a single idea: the belief that data can provide a coherent model of the world. But the sheer volume of information available to us reveals less than we hope. Rather, it heralds a new Dark Age: a world of incomprehension.

Artist and writer James Bridle offers us a warning against this future, discussing the limits of technology and how it aids our understanding of the world. Surveying the history of art, technology and information systems he reveals the dark clouds that gather over discussions of the digital sublime.

He will be in conversation with Laurie Penny.

Please note that you will be asked of proof for your eligibility of a concession ticket. Concessions apply to Full Time Students, Job Seekers Allowance, Incapacity Benefit claimants, over 60s and disabled people. The Partner Rate applies to those working at the following organisations: Arts Council, Bristol City Council, Businesswest, University of Bristol and UWE. Please note that no refunds/exchanges are possible for tickets already purchased at the higher price.

Please ensure you use the correct email address. This is where your ticket will be sent. If you do not provide the correct address, you will not receive the acknowledgement email or ticket. Please show proof of ticket (either print out or on device) at the door.

Please note we only refund tickets if the event is cancelled. Events start punctually and, out of consideration to other audience members and speakers, our policy is not to admit or issue refunds to latecomers.

The Festival of Ideas endeavours to hold its events in venues that are accessible to all, but if you have specific access concerns it is advisable to contact the venue direct. There is no loop system at Waterstones. There are toilet facilities in store.

Full terms and conditions, including our Privacy Policy, can be found on our website.
