Description

Kristen Roupenian
How to Mess Up Relationships
Wed 6 February 2019, 19:00-20:00
Waterstones (Union Street entrance)
£8 / £6 / £4.50

£4.50 PARTNER RATE is for staff, students or members at the following organisations: Arts Council England, Bristol City Council, Business West, University of Bristol and UWE.

Emerging from a seven-year relationship in her mid-thirties, Kristen Roupenian thought she’d be much better at dating – she was older, wiser and boasted a finely tuned bullshit detector. Instead, a memorably bad encounter planted the seed for the story ‘Cat Person’, which became a viral sensation after being published by the New Yorker in December 2017. It established Roupenian as one of the most talked-about new voices in American fiction.

She tells stories of women’s lives now in You Know You Want It: women at work, at home, on dates, at the doctor’s, with their families and with their friends; women grappling with desire, punishment, guilt and anger. These are stories that make you feel fascinated but repelled, scared but delighted, revolted but aroused.

Funny, furious, sly and explicit, Roupenian takes a long, hard look at the messed-up power dynamic between men and women – and messes it up some more.

Please note that you will be asked of proof for your eligibility of a concession ticket.
