Description

The Future of Social Justice
Mon 5 December 2016, 18.30-20.00
Great Hall, Wills Memorial Building, University of Bristol
Free, but booking required

What have been the most significant successes for social justice over the last 20 years and what are the biggest challenges and opportunities coming up?

2016 has been a momentous year with issues of social justice at the forefront of debates around Brexit and global migration. It is also the year in which Policy Press at the University of Bristol is celebrating 20 years of publishing to help bring about positive social change. A panel of leading writers and commentators on social justice look at the issues and suggest possible solutions:

Melissa Benn, journalist and author of The Truth About our Schools (Routledge)
Danny Dorling, University of Oxford and author of Injustice: Why Social Inequality Still Persists (Policy Press)
Kayleigh Garthwaite, Durham University and author of Hunger Pains: Life Inside Foodbank Britain (Policy Press)
Owen Jones, journalist and author of The Establishment (Penguin)

To ensure we can include as many audience questions as possible on the night, we are collecting them at time of booking.

This event is free, but booking is required. Online booking is via Eventbrite and managed by Festival of Ideas. Please use the contact function in Eventbrite or get in touch with any online booking queries.

We have restricted the number of tickets that can be booked to one per transaction. This has been introduced in an effort to stop people automatically booking multiple tickets without confirming if they have guests to go with them. We hope this will help to limit the number of 'no shows' at the events, which currently run at around 35% of bookings. If you need more than one ticket, you can click on the booking link again. The little extra effort involved will hopefully put off those who don’t really need more than one, but not those who do.

Events start punctually and, out of consideration to other audience members and speakers, our policy is not to admit latecomers. Please make sure to arrive before the advertised start time to take your seat/s.

The Festival of Ideas endeavours to hold its events in venues that are accessible to all. The Great Hall in the Wills Memorial Building has a loop system and is accessible to wheelchair users. For more information about accessing the venue, check here. If you have specific access concerns, please do contact us with any questions.

We sometimes film and photograph Festival of Ideas events. Please let us know if you do not wish to be filmed or photographed.

Audience Data will be shared with University of Bristol and you may be contacted by them about future events. Please let us know if you do not want your information to be shared.
