Event description


Our annual Spring Festival of Physics will again take place this year at the School of Physics, Tyndall Avenue, University of Bristol. The date is Saturday, 30 March: make a note in your diary!

There will be a full programme of lectures and workshops, these will be added to this page as details are arranged, so look back frequently. Registration is free, but essential.

The provisional timetable is as follows:

9:30 Doors Open. Tea and Coffee available.

9:55 Welcome

10:00 Henning Flaecher (Particle Physics, University of Bristol): "Big Data in High-Energy Particle Physics"

11:00 Break

11:10 Students from Badminton Girls' School: "The Mysterious Realm of Superconductors"

12:10 Break for lunch. There are many cafes, pubs and restaurants close to the School of Physics. Or you may prefer to bring your sandwiches. There will also be many exhibitions and hands-on demonstrations to visit on the ground floor and in the Enderby Room in the basement, including "Magnetism table demonstrations" by students from Badminton School, "Light Activities" by Justin Quinell, and students from the Bristol Centre for Functional Nanomaterials.

14:00 Dame Julia Slingo (former Chief Scientist, Met Office): "Big Data in Weather and Climate Science"

14:50 Break

15:00 Michael de Podesta (National Physical Laboratory): "The SI Redefined." A talk about why measurement matters & the imminent redefinition of four SI units

16:00 Close

There will also be workshops during the day:

There is no separate booking for these workshops: just turn up! (But do book above for the Festival as a whole!)
