Lawrence Hoo
CARGO – Book launch

Mon 14 October 2019, please arrive 19:00 for a 19:30 start
Waterstones (Union Street)
Free, but booking required

CARGO is a new immersive multi-media experience that offers an alternative narrative to the story of the transatlantic slave trade. It will open in mid-2020 and go on tour after Bristol. Through the stories depicted in images and in poetry by Lawrence Hoo, CARGO provides an accurate historical account of the fight for the freedom of the enslaved, and their subsequent human and civil rights. CARGO will also highlight the strength and resilience of key pivotal characters who blazed a trail battling adversity, laying the foundations for the futures we all share as a result.

Launching tonight in this special Festival of the Future City event is Lawrence Hoo’s new book. Profiling the lives of many individuals from the African Diaspora, including Nanny of The Maroons, Samuel Sharpe and Mary Seacole - all people who worked within unimaginable confines but continued to inspire and empower others through their actions - to the present day leaders and change makers, many from Bristol, Hoo’s poetry celebrates their lives and work and looks forward to better futures.

Events start punctually and, out of consideration to other audience members and speakers, our policy is not to admit latecomers. Please make sure to arrive before the advertised start time to take your seat/s.

We have restricted the number of tickets that can be booked to one per transaction. This has been introduced in an effort to stop people automatically booking multiple tickets without confirming if they have guests to go with them. We hope this will help to limit the number of 'no shows' at the events, which currently run at around 35% of bookings. If you need more than one ticket, you can click on the booking link again. The little extra effort involved will hopefully put off those who don’t really need more than one, but not those who do.

Please ensure you use the correct email address. This is where your ticket will be sent for your own record. If you do not provide the correct address, you will not receive the acknowledgement email or ticket. To save paper we ask that whenever possible you show your ticket on a mobile device. We have access to the live list at the venue and can check if you aren't able to use a mobile device on the night.

The Festival of Ideas endeavours to hold its events in venues that are accessible to all, but if you have specific access concerns it is advisable to contact the venue direct. There is no loop system at Waterstones. There are toilet facilities in store.

When you book ticket/s you will receive reminder and feedback emails and any urgent notifications about the event. We will not contact you again unless you are subscribed to our newsletter.

Full terms and conditions, including our Privacy Policy, can be found on our website.
