CALLING all thrifters! Grab your tools, your plains and purls, your pinny and your button  box because this year’s Festival of Thrift is back and it’s on track to be even bigger, better and more thrift-filled than 2013 where 27,000 people came along to join in the fun.

Taking place at Lingfield Point in Darlington on Saturday September 27, and Sunday September 28, the whole festival has expanded with a new stage and even more workshops, food, stalls, speakers and things to see and do! There will be more stalls than ever selling upcycled, recycled and second-hand gems right across the site.

New for 2014 is the Fix It Café where expert volunteers will be on hand to help you to fix your broken items, anything from damaged shoes to electrical goods. Inside the café festival-goers will find ‘fixers’ with tools, advice and a whole heap of knowledge, and if all else fails some ideas on how to re-use or recycle.  Shed-town will be on site too, with every shed-based activity you can think of (and some you probably can’t think of!).

The Alternative Village Fete produced by Home Live Art will feature installations and interactive activities – all celebrating living a fun and thrifty life. Beccy McCrae will fill a greenhouse full of confetti made from unrecyclable material for children to play in and Fanshen will be on site with their Apple Cart, music and humour. Look out for Nu-urban Gardeners who will be inviting visitors to make their own miniature allotments and Janey Moffatt will be producing animated films using hand-puppets.

There’ll be Jamalot, the festival’s very own chutney and jam factory. An on site picnic with bespoke hampers and a Thriftea party with self-made crockery and cake stands. Also returning is Bistro Du Van which has doubled in size from last year and will offer global food served in up-cycled vans to hungry festival-goers.

The new main stage will host a thrilling programme of music and performance throughout the weekend compared by CharityShop DJ. Look out for ‘Choose your Cheese’ and the Swap Shop, where you can exchange clothes, books, toys, plants, knowledge and talents! There’s a Junk Orchestra on stage too, working with the team at Sage Gateshead they’ll be asking for help to make and play the instruments made from your donated ‘junk’.

And Festival of Thrift can also announce that uber-crafter and Channel 4’s ‘Superscrimper’ Nicolette Lafonseca will be creating an upcycled room - showing you can do beautiful on a budget.  Max McMurdo - also currently featuring on Channel 4’s ‘Great British Sheds’ will be heading along to the Festival too.

The Festival of Thrift will happen once again in the perfect setting of Lingfield Point, itself an exceptional example of a mixed-use sustainable development.

The festival will be once again curated by legendary designers Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway, Marchday Director John Orchard and directed by Stella Hall.
