On October 31st the mandatory duty to report FGM under section 74 of the Serious Crime Act 2015 will have been in force for a year (following its introduction on 31st October 2015). Therefore, it is an appropriate and opportune time to come together to reflect, discuss and challenge recent legislative reforms to the law on FGM in the UK.
This one-day symposium seeks to consider whether recent reforms to the law on FGM are in the best interests of those they seek to protect. A diverse group of speakers, covering legal, ethical, clinical, sociological, anthropological, therapeutic, and operational approaches, will offer critical perspectives on FGM legislation, leading to discussions which explore the possibility of a more constructive counter-narrative.
This event is supported by the Research Opportunities Fund and the Crime Research Centre.
