PROGRAMME FOR THE DAY

10.30 – 12.00 : FIBIS Experts will be available to answer members’ questions
12.00 – 1.30 : Lunch break
1.30 – 2.30 : Sue Paul, a keen family historian who instigated a One-Name study of the name Bowery, will present Captain Thomas Bowery: The Biography” and relate how she traced her ancestor, an extraordinary character involved in the early days of trade with the East Indies. Thomas Bowery arrived in India at a surprisingly young age and was to remain there for 19 years. Following his return home, he published the first Malay-English Dictionary and became a successful East Indies trader. Many of his ships were hit by disaster, including the Worcester whose seizure by the Scots was pivotal in the Union of Scotland and England.
2.30 – 3.00 : Refreshment break
3.00 – 4.00 : Mark Davies, a keen genealogist and historian will present:
One word, two Indian journeys, four Anglo-Indian families and a 1,000 year genealogy.”
Stemming from an unexpected find in the Census of 1881 that his grandfather had been born in Calcutta, Mark embarked upon two trips to India to search for more information. The first trip was hampered by weather and insurgency, but in 2018, Mark succeeded in visiting Leslieganj in Jharkhand, named for his progenitor, Matthew Leslie (c.1755-1804), a senior E.I.C. official who lived all his adult life in India. But there was much more to learn, and Mark’s investigation was to take him in a full circle, to unexpected family connections back in his home town of Oxford. Mark had discovered a treasure trove of ancestry from a single word.
