Event description
Brigitte Kaltenbacher (BeeKay) will share her knowledge of using nettles to create a silk like thread.

About this Event

Did you know you can make yarn and textiles from nettles? Stinging nettles have been used as a fibre plant for textiles for over 3000 years in the UK, to make everything from heavy sailcloth to fine table linen up until the 18th century. The fibre of the local European nettle is naturally silky, luxurious & very strong.

And no, nettle fibre, yarn or textiles do not sting!

Brigitte is a recent MA Textiles graduate from the UCA Farnham.  Her work focuses on sustainable textiles and in particular the use of local nettles as a fibre plant. Brigitte gives talks on the European nettle as a fibre plant and its botanical and cultural history. She also demonstrates the long lost art of making textiles from nettles. Only a few simple tools – and a certain amount of patience – is necessary for almost anyone to extract fibre from local stinging nettles. She will also show examples of spun nettle yarn and woven nettle tweeds.
