Event description

Description

Overview

Nuno-felting is a traditional wool manipulation method to form a woollen surface through water agitation while not using knitting needles. Wool fibres can be overlayed with other materials such as ribbon, fabrics and threads during the felting process. Layers can be cut into to reveal those concealed beneath, giving greater interest and ranges of colour, texture and pattern.

Participants will be shown how to create two and three dimensional felted designs.

Cross curricular links:

  • Science - Origin of wool fibres and its preparation for feltmaking. The physical properties of natural wool fibres and how they change with heat and pressure. Overlaying coloured fibres to create different colour palettes.

  • Historical and contemporary applications of felt and feltmaking - in fashion/clothing, by craftsmen/artists, soft furnishings, in different cultures across the world.

  • Literature: terminology linked to feltmaking e.g. nuno felting, weave, bonding, agitation, abstract, tactile, fibre.
