Newark on Trent is on the mainline from King's Cross going north towards Edinburgh. From London it's just 1 hour 25 min by direct train and a ten minute walk into town. There is a good cross-country service to Newark Castle Station that connects to Sheffield, Nottingham, and Lincoln

Newark is a small town and there is a limit to the hotels and B&Bs, but near enough by train to Lincoln and Nottingham and Grantham to find reasonably convenient accommodation.
