About this event

This lecture by Ellie Grimes and Dan Wales-Hart is one of three lectures introducing and exploring the topic of Carbon Offsetting held in cooperation with Greener Berwick.

Looking at carbon credits and how they work in Northumberland, Dan will introduce the North East Carbon and Nature Marketplace. Ellie will introduce the other work of the NZNEE Partnership, and how the Marketplace can be the central one-stop shop for nature recovery, decarbonisation, and social value benefits.

Ellie, who is the NZNEE Programme Manager, will introduce the Partnership, and explain why it is an integral part of creating a cleaner, greener, fairer North East. She will also discuss the Partnership’s priority action areas, and reflect on its work so far.

Ellie has a degree in Chemistry from Newcastle University, and a Master's exploring third-generation solar cells - a window into how science can solve real-world energy challenges. These aren’t just technical wins- they help lower bills, improve local infrastructure, and make the North East a better place to live and work. In her regional role, she helps bring organisations together- from local councils to community groups, the private sector to the 3rd sector - to accelerate climate progress.

Dan Wales-Hart is the Policy Adviser for Environment, Coast and Rural matters at the North East Combined Authority. His background is in ecology, with a degree in Zoology, a Master’s in Ecological Consultancy, and he was a consultant ecologist for 10 years prior to joining the Combined Authority. He joined the Combined Authority in February 2025, and started work on building the North East Carbon and Nature Marketplace platform. The platform launched with 10,000+ Carbon Credits for sale, and £11.5m of nature recovery and decarbonisation projects ready to fund.

Aside from the Marketplace, he works within the wider Energy & Environment team at the Combined Authority. He advises internal colleagues and external stakeholders on proposed policy around several key themes, including Local Nature Recovery Strategies, Biodiversity Net Gain, Climate Resilience, and Rural and Coastal issues and economy.

Tea and coffee will be served, and all are welcome. There is no need to print out and bring your ticket, as we will have a record of your booking.
