Fights in the movies can be exciting, dynamic, fast and thrilling to watch – but have you ever wanted to be able to do it for yourself? Ever wanted to know HOW it’s done? Fancy yourself as the next Bond? Or Bourne? Come along and train on this unique course and leave with a full DVD recording of your final scenes.

Course Summary

You will gain a working knowledge of film fighting techniques. We will use unarmed combat to explore the requirements and quirks of working in this medium. Basic set etiquette and performance disciplines will be covered and a constant emphasis placed on safety and creating reality for the camera.

This course is open to anyone regardless of your previous experience. Beginner or advanced, actor, director, stage manager, martial artist, or those who are simply curious! You must be at least 18 years old.

This course will take place at the Birmingham Conservatoire inside Millennium Point, and is taught by Roger Bartlett (Equity Fight Director and Master Teacher with the BASSC and graduate of the International Stunt School).

Course dates are:

Term 1: Tuesday 9th January – Tuesday 20th March 2018.

Term 2: Tuesday 24th April – Tuesday 3rd July 2018.

Classes will run from 7.00pm – 8.30pm every week. Regular attendance is essential.

Key Facts

This course is about learning the techniques and methods involved when fighting for film. A constant emphasis will be placed on how to work in the safest and most controlled manner and there will be the opportunity to take leave with a video recording of your final scenes.

This is a practical course where teaching is done by instructor demonstration followed by students working in pairs. Students will be expected to engage in Q&A sessions with the tutor as part of the group learning process. A certain amount of physical and mental stamina is required.

You will learn how to punch, kick and fall, how to animate the action and play to the camera.

This is a practical course. The class sessions will consist of learning then filming choreography, and giving feedback on filmed fights. An emphasis will be placed on safety and proper set technique.

Term 1 will cover basic western style fights and term 2 will look at the demands and techniques used in martial arts style fights.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Safely perform a realistic film fight sequence.

• Demonstrate an awareness of safe technique for rehearsing a film fight sequence.

• Demonstrate an awareness of film set etiquette.

• Realise character, emotion and narrative through the use of body and movement.

While no previous knowledge is necessary, the course is most suitable for those with prior stage combat training.

Further information

You will be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.

You will need to wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing and training shoes with a good grip. You may also wish to bring a notebook and something to write with.
