Description

Local resident and 'our hero' Carol Gibson (Chapeltown/Marsh Lane, Eckington). Carol will be sharing her personal experience of how she moved out of the frying pan of Chapeltown next to Ecclesfield where there are licences already in place for a company to process the waste water from local fracking sites. And into the fire, 13 miles from Chapeltown to the quiet village of Marsh Lane, Eckington, North East Derbyshire - where a chemical company has obtained ‘Petroleum Exploration & Development Licences' and applied for planning permission to erect a drilling rig up to 60m tall and drill around 2,400m down into the ground to investigate the suitability of the rock for fracking – the extraction of gas after injecting water and chemicals at high pressure within 500m of Carol's home.

Come and hear Carol's personal experiences of 'living with the threat of Fracking', and how this now applies to us all, whether you're pro or against fracking. Watch how a close community from 'The Bentley Valley' in Australia, united and prevented the fracking companies from fracking their valley.

'The Bentley Effect' - Synopsis: When the coal shale gas industry staked a claim on the Northern Rivers shire of Australia, alarm bells rang out. A critical mass of people from all walks of life – activists, farmers, landowners, mums, dads, scientists – organised themselves to rally against the unconventional gas invasion. Despite the enormous public opposition, the gas industry and the State Government were determined to see their gas plan through. A series of dramatic blockades ensued, before the final battle lines were drawn in the peaceful farming valley of Bentley. Thousands of people flocked to the site to stare down the threat of 850 riot police, ordered in to break up the protest.

Filmed over five years, The Bentley Effect documents the highs and lows of the battle to keep a unique part of Australia gasfield-free. This timely story of a community’s heroic stand shows how strategic direct action and peaceful protest from a committed community can overcome industrial might and political short-sightedness. It celebrates the non-violent ‘Eureka Stockade’ of our time and chronicles one of the fastest growing social movements we have ever witnessed.
