Event description

Description

From the 1960s, accessibility to lightweight technology allowed for new methods and pioneering changes in cinema that put filmmaking into the hands of a new generation. Inspired by underground cinema, the historical avant-garde or the new political activist cinema, independent filmmakers contributed to challenging film form. Regional production became possible across the UK as a series of workshops and film houses emerged to make and show these new films. Revisiting this legacy, Nottingham-based collective Film Free and Easy presents an evening of Independent films from the East Midlands 1965 to 1985.

The programme will be accompanied by a commentary from Film Free and Easy, contextualising the conditions, aesthetic turns and period in which these films came to be made.

Film Free and Easy is a Nottingham based collective of artists who, over the last four years, have run a series of film events across the East Midlands. Each event is devoted to the creation of a unique evening of site-specific work where every piece of moving image work, brought along by the audience, is programmed together. This mixture of failures, triumphs, curiosities, and experiments form a melting pot of material to look at, talk about and learn from.

Nottingham Contemporary’s public programme is jointly funded by Nottingham Trent University and The University of Nottingham.
