Event description
IT HAPPENED HERE - The Story of the German Occupation of England . By Kevin Brownlow and Andrew Mollo. Remastered by BFI National Archive

About this Event

Invading in July 1940, the German army eventually crushed the resistance, which lacked outside support. Then in 1944, it resurfaced.’

Kevin Brownlow and Andrew Mollo were teenagers when they began making this fascinating film. Shooting at weekends, with a largely amateur cast, it took them eight years. No previous film had clearly explained what we had been fighting against, or what National Socialism stood for, so they aimed to make their film as realistic as possible. Rejecting the use of stock footage, they shot the entire film. Attention to authentic detail has given it a compelling and disturbing documentary realism.

Three members of the ‘Immediate Action’ organisation (played by real British fascists) were filmed spontaneously and unscripted, giving repulsive answers to political questions. United Artists demanded the scene’s deletion before distribution. Re-mastering by the BFI national archive has now restored the film to its original form. It Happened Here remains a powerful and urgent warning against the politics of hate.
