Event description

Description

Running over six twilight sessions starting on 19th September, teachers will be introduced to the key techniques involved in shooting, editing and creating a film with a bespoke soundtrack. You will gain practical skills in camera techniques, lighting, editing and soundtracking using the latest industry standard software. As well as these creative and technical skills, participants will have the opportunity to share good practice and learn about the resources and support available for teaching Moving Image Arts.

This course is suitable for teachers of Moving Image Arts and Media Studies at both GCSE and GCE level. It will be delivered on behalf of Into Film by experienced trainers from Nerve Belfast who work in the local film industry.

Your £15 covers the cost of all six sessions, and you are strongly encouraged to attend all sessions in the course. All sessions run from 16:30 - 18:30.

Session 1 - Camera and the Power of Shot Selection - Wed 19th September

In this introductory session we explore the very beginnings of cinema and, with it, the most important building block in film grammar the camera shot. With a mix of presentations and hands-on demonstration and experimentation, teachers will be given a theoretical and practical guide to camera technique. Practical camera work will focus on the use of DSLRs and domestic camcorders but some guidance will be given on the use of other devices. Teachers will be provided with Into Film's online resources on camera, including PowerPoint presentations for use within the classroom.

Session 2 - Editing and the Power of Cutting - Wed 26th September

In this session teachers will be given a guide to the evolution of editing and how specific film movements such as Soviet Montage changed how film editors and directors cut films. This presentation will be followed by practical hands-on instruction in editing in which pre-existing footage will be used to demonstrate how to master both montage and continuity editing techniques. You will be provided with resources on editing, including presentations for use back in the classroom.

Session 3 - Sound - Wed 3rd October

In week 3 we will cover the evolution of sound in cinema and explore the theoretical concepts underpinning sound design and music in films. We will also provide practical hands-on instruction on recording production audio, syncing sound, recording and sourcing sound effects and music, and the dos and don'ts of post-production audio. Participants will be provided with Into Film's online resources on sound, including presentations for use within the classroom.

Session 4 Lighting and Cinematography - Wed 10th October

We will explore the role of lighting in cinema with an emphasis on practical application. This session will cover both basic three-point lighting techniques as well as more specialised models such as lighting for green screen. We will also be providing resources and instructional guides on how to design lighting set-ups and how to colour grade footage in post-production.

Session 5 Creative Approaches to MIA Coursework - Wed 17th October

This session will focus upon the practicalities of producing coursework and overcoming the challenges involved. Teachers will be invited to bring along work that you or your pupils have created for a group discussion around creative approaches to producing coursework. Examples of previous MIA films and coursework will be shared with participants.

Session 6 Sharing Good Practice - Wed 24th October

This final sharing session will explore the wide range of resources and websites that are available to support creative filmmaking as well as the networks that already exist through which teachers of Moving Image Arts and Media Studies can exchange information, swap top tips and learn from each other.
