Event description

Description

Ruskin House Film Screen is showing: NAE PASARAN!

Felipe Bustos Sierra's widely acclaimed documentary feature will be shown in full HD on the 133in screen in Ruskin House Cedar Room. It tells the story of how, in 1974, a small group of workers in the Rolls Royce aircraft factory at East Kilbride (led by Bob Fulton, Robert Sommerville, Stuart Barrie and John Keenan) refused to refurbish the engines of Chilean jet fighters. Risking their livelihoods, they refused to be made morally culpable and they carried the whole workforce with them.

Theirs was just one act of solidarity among many around the world against Pinochet's brutal dictatorship. But its huge significance is uncovered when the investigation shifts to Chile. It's a documentary that needed to be made and the film's director traced the key men, long since retired, enabling them to share their story with a wider public and a new generation. Movingly told, and historically informative, it's also a powerful reminder of the importance of working-class solidarity and how effective it can be.

A film not to be missed.

BORDANDO MEMORIA

Accompanying the screening of Nae Pasaran! at Ruskin House, on 22 February, will be an exhibition of commemorative embroidery work by BORDANDO MEMORIA (Embroidering Memory Project). Members of the exiled Chilean community and their supporters came together last year, to mark 45 years since the brutal military coup, which overthrew the democratically elected President Salvador Allende. The Project creates hand-embroidered textile pieces to highlight the need for justice and an end to the law which grants impunity from prosecution for violations against human rights. Their work helps to keep alive an important part of Chile's history, being systematically eradicated today. This includes embroidering the names of over 3,000 men, women and children who disappeared in Chile or were executed for political reasons during Pinochet's military dictatorship between 1973 and 1990.
