Event Details

Take a rural village with a vision to live in a more sustainable way… add an infectiously enthusiastic mayor, 21 projects, some inspiring volunteers, and watch what happens.

That’s what’s in store for you at our free film night coming up in Alston on Thursday 27 April.

The film ‘Qu’est-ce qu’on attend? (‘What Are We Waiting For?’) was just released this past winter and shows how a village in Alsace in the north east of France has created more than one hundred jobs and cut their CO2 emissions by around 600 tonnes – all while bringing their community together, tackling isolation and loneliness, too.

The film follows the village of Ungersheim for a year, charting progress on their projects tackling sustainability in all different aspects of life – from housing, food growing and community renewable energy to transport.

There’s the Passivhaus co-housing project. There’s the couple growing wheat and grains for their artisan bread. There’s the replacement of the school bus with a horse-drawn carriage, with the horse working in the fields until it’s time for the return school run.

It’s not all plain sailing, as you might imagine, and the film shows the challenges and struggles that those driving the changes are trying to overcome.

What the village is doing is based around the Transition Towns model that grew from Totnes in Devon, and there’s a brilliant review of the film by the founder of this movement, Rob Hopkins (below).

The film has just been shown this spring at the 2017 Transition Town Totnes Film Festival and we’re not aware of it having been screened in Cumbria yet, so this is a fantastic opportunity to be among the first to see it. The screening also celebrates the start of the Alston Moor community planning process led by Alston Moor Partnership, which includes the Alston Moor Greenprint project headed up by CAfS and funded by Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. The film’s messages and ideas are very timely, as the Greenprint project sets out on a three-year journey exploring ways for the area to be more sustainable.

Stand by to be challenged and inspired!

This free event is funded by Esmée Fairbairn Foundation as part of the Alston Moor Greenprint project, and hosted in conjunction with Alston Moor Partnership and Alston Moor Film. Doors open at 7pm and the film starts at 7.30pm.

It’d be really helpful to us if you could book your free place, for numbers… please scroll down to the register section below.
